What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are living organisms or bacteria that are beneficial to the human body. While we often associate bacteria with illness, many types of bacteria are actually important for maintaining overall health. In our gut, we have a community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome. Probiotics are the “good” bacteria that reside in our gut and help keep our digestive system functioning optimally. These beneficial bacteria can help keep pathogens (harmful bacteria) in check, improve nutrient absorption from the food we eat, and even play a role in regulating our immune system. Some common food sources of probiotics include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and tempeh.
